How Many Notes
How Many Notes - Douglas W. Fielder
I was [G] sitting on the porch one fine day
Pulled [C] out my guitar and started to play
When [G] little Johnny G came walking [D] by
He [G] listened to me for a while
I’d [C] look at him and he’d just smile
He [G] winked and said he’d [D] be back bye and [G] bye.
He [G] disappeared, but came right back
[C] Pulled his fiddle out of its pack
[G] Tuned it up and sat himself right [D] down
[G] Before I knew it he was flailing
That [C] fiddle sounded like it was wailingLittle [G] Johnny G was [D] taking me to [G] town
[Walk up from G to C]
[C] How many [G] notes did [C] he just [G] play?
[C] How does he [G] do it [D] anyway
[C] His sense of [D} rhythm is [G] so com [C] plete…….
And he [G] never ever [D] seems to miss a [G] beat…..
[Walk up from G to C]
[C] He just keeps [G] tapping [C] his big [G} toe
[C] He plays it [G] fast and he [D} plays it slow
[C] I never heard [D ] anybody [G] play so [C] sweet…..
And he [G] never ever [D] seems to miss a [G] beat…..
We were [G] just beginning our second song
When [C] Billy Bob Johnson came along
With his [G] banjo case swinging to and [D] fro
He [G] sat right down and pulled it out
Ole [C] Johnny G began to shout
“Hey [G] Billy Bob, [D] show us what you [G] know”
Well [G] Billy started pickin slow
But he [C] sped right up, don’t you know
Pretty [G] soon he and Johnny were going at it [D] strong
They were [G] pickin and playing mighty good
They were [C] tapping and swaying where they stood
And [G] I just started [D] belting out this [G] song….
[Chorus]
Well [G] before too long we all exploded
We were [C] rocking out and the porch was loaded
With [G] other pickers who were only passing [D] by
[G} Harmonicas and steel guitars,
a [C] stand up bass and some old fruit jars
A [G] front yard full of [D] people getting [G] high
We were [G] pickin and playing, man alive
When the [C] Sheriffs car pulled in the drive
Sheriff [G] Watson he got out and looked my [D] way
Well the [G] music stopped as he opened his trunk
I [C] felt so sure that we were sunk
He got [G] out his mando [D] lin and began to [G] play
[Chorus]
