I Wanted The Kiss
Written at Christmas time 2006, I was in California at my sisters home in San Diego and was asked to write a song for a budding country singer (female). I wrote the song and sent it to her, but right after doing that I realized how much of my separation (in August that year) was wrapped up in what I had written and redid the lyrics for a male perspective. The music, I later realized, was very John Prine!
I Wanted the Kiss - Douglas Whitney Fielder
[G] [C] [G]
When I [G] woke up this morning I [C] just felt so [G] old.
The [C] room was too [G] quiet, the [D] bed was too cold.
There’s no [G] boots on the carpet, no [C] clothes on the [G] chair.
There’s no [C] smell of fresh [G] coffee to [D] sweetened the [G] air [C] [G]
Guess I [G] can’t be too angry since I [C] started it [G] all.
There’s a [C] moment in [G] time when [D] someone starts to fall.
Out of [G] love with a person who [C] still treats them [G] right.
And starts [C] dreaming bout [G] someone else [D] deep in the [G] night [C] [G]
So I’ll [C] drink like a [D] cowboy whose [G] just gotten paid.
I’ll be [C] looking for [D] comfort as the [G] lights start to fade.
I’ll be [C] looking for [D] something that I [G] just can’t [C] replace.
I’ll be [G] staring at her but I’ll [D] still see your [E] face.
I’ll be [G] staring at her but I’ll [D] still see your [G] face [C] [G]
When the [G] big whistle blew at the [C] end of the [G] day
I went [C] down to the [G] office and I [D] picked up my pay
I walked [G] down to the honky tonk and [C] sat at the [G] bar
My [C] eyes scanned the [G] room, I didn’t [D] have to look [G] far [C] [G]
There are [G] women who’ll love you for an [C] hour or [G] two
If your [C] pockets are [G] loaded and you’re [D] good looking too.
Cause they [G] all like to dance and they [C] all want to [G] play
They’re all [C] looking for [G] someone to [D] take them [G] away [C] [G]
But [C] that’s not like [D] being with some [G] body who cares
You won’t [C] get the same [D] feeling from a [G] woman who stares
At the [C] bottle of [D] whiskey that you [G] hold in your [C] hand
She’s not [G] thinking bout you just the [D] next one night [E] stand
She’s not [G] thinking bout you just the [D] next one night [G] stand [C] [G]
When I [G] fell into bed tonight [C] tired to the [G] bone.
I [C] looked at the [G] clock and I [D] looked at the phone.
I had [G] only one thought, that I [C] wanted you [G] here.
I [C] started to [G] call but [D] succumbed to that [G] fear [C] [G]
Maybe [G] God has a purpose or the [C] Devil a [G] plan.
Or is [C] that just the [G] way between [D] woman and man.
Love might [G] go on forever, it might [C] just last one [G] night.
Will it [C] end with a [G] kiss or will it [D] end with a [G] fight [C] [G]
And it [C] never was [D] easy just to [G] be by your side
There were [C] all of these [D] feelings that I [G] just could not hide
But I [C] never [D] expected it would [G] all end like [C] this.
I did [G] not want the fight, you know [D] I wanted the [E] kiss.
I did [G] not want the fight, you know [D] I wanted the [G] kiss [C] [G]
So I’ll [C] drink like a [D] cowboy whose [G] just gotten paid.
I’ll be [C] looking for [D] comfort as the [G] lights start to fade.
I’ll be [C] looking for [D] something that I [G] just can’t [C] replace.
I’ll be [G] staring at her but I’ll [D] still see your [E] face.
I’ll be [G] staring at her but I’ll [D] still see your [G] face [C] [G]
